In the paper the bifurcation problem of an incompressible plate subjected to pure bending is studied. The analysis is carried out using a hypoelastic constitutive model. The elastic-plastic material behaviour in uniaxial states is described by the linear work-hardening law. A classification of regimes of the bifurcation equation is also performed. An asymptotic analysis has been carried out to establish the critical condition of the deformation plate strip for short wavelength surface instability. The considered short wavelength surface instability in the compressive zone defines the first bifurcation point in the deformation process of the plate.
